How to read an omega-3 label without getting lost in the numbers
Start with what the numbers describe
Fish oil, total omega-3s, EPA and DHA are related terms, but they are not interchangeable label amounts. A large number on the front of a bottle may describe the oil quantity rather than the specific fatty acids you are comparing. Read the Supplement Facts and serving size together. NIH omega-3 fact sheet
Your five-point comparison
- Serving size: how many capsules make up the listed serving?
- EPA and DHA: are their amounts separately stated, and are they per capsule or per serving?
- Source: fish, algae or a plant oil? These do not necessarily provide the same fatty-acid profile.
- Other ingredients: what else is in the formula, and does it overlap with your routine?
- Evidence: does an absorption or benefit claim apply to this finished product or to a different preparation?
ALA is a plant-associated omega-3, while EPA and DHA are found in marine sources. Conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA is limited. That makes the named fatty acids useful comparison points, rather than relying on the word “omega” alone. NIH consumer guide
Does better absorption mean better results?
Delivery technology can be a legitimate question to investigate. But a claim about absorption should identify what was measured, the comparator and the preparation. A higher blood measurement does not, by itself, demonstrate every advertised health benefit. Ask for evidence that matches your actual question.
What do clinical outcomes tell us?
The large VITAL trial tested a marine omega-3 preparation in 25,871 older adults. It did not significantly lower the trial's primary major cardiovascular-event or invasive-cancer outcomes. Some secondary cardiovascular findings were favorable. The result illustrates why “supports heart health” should not be converted into a blanket promise to prevent disease. It was not a trial of Omegas 4. VITAL trial
Before buying
Compare the full daily serving and cost, not just bottle size. Check the current label's warnings and suitability with your clinician if you take medication. Use the product directions rather than copying a high-dose research regimen.

Common questions
Is fish oil the same as omega-3? Fish oil is a source; EPA/DHA amounts describe particular components. Check the label rather than assuming the quantities match.
Is a vegan omega product equivalent? Compare the actual named fatty acids and amounts. “Plant-based” alone is not enough to determine equivalence.
What is the best omega supplement? The useful comparison is the one that fits your dietary needs, label requirements and actual evidence—not the biggest front-label number.
